A favorite amongst children learning a variety of musical instruments is the classic song, Hot Cross Buns. The song is also a traditional English nursery rhyme, and street cry, and is associated with the Christian period from Good Friday to Easter. During this most holy time, buns are traditionally cooked with a visible cross baked into the top of the bun.

 

The first published version of the nursery Rhyme appears in Christmas Box, in 1798, however there are earlier references to the street cry, dating to 1733. The songs importance as a part of English history is noted by its inclusion in the Roud Folk Song Index. Hot Cross Buns popularity amongst early music learners is primarily because of the songs simplicity.
