Piano Improvisation Recordings by Jackie

Posted by Yoke Wong on 9/15/2012 to Inspirational Stories

Recently I received an email from Jackie who lives in Texas.  With her permission, I’d like to share her email with you.

“Hi Ms. Wong. I don't have a video, but I was able to make a recording. I started on the lesson on color chords/maj7 chords today. For the first time, I was able to play something that wasn't written on paper and it didn't sound half bad. There are a few "oopses" but I was trying to capture the moment before it escaped me. I just started playing what I felt using the Fmaj7 chord as a starting point. Wow, how liberating!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Here are the two recordings of Jackie.

Recording 1 (F Major 7th) - A beautiful ballad style composed primarily with major 7th chord is used in this song. You can hear the nostalgic left hand pattern throughout the whole song. Not bad for a first time improviser.

Radio Player

Recording 2 (D Major) - Jackie was able to creatively arrange and improvise her music using dynamics and theme notes. She played the music with expression and emotion throughout the composition.

Radio Player

The techniques she used are covered by the piano lessons in Definitive Piano Improvisation course. She ordered the course on July 23, 2012.

Jackie, how lovely! You sound like you've been improvising for a long time. The recording quality is decent, too. What kind of microphone & recording equipment did you use?

Dear Yoke Wong, I am not good in using computer. Moreover, my computer set is an old set. So I can't do recording, sometimes I even have problem in down loading your lesson. Anyway, I am still playing using all the books which I bought from you. Even the book that you mention above I do have it too. I think I am a slow learner. Hope that one day you will hear from me that I am playing for my Sunday School children which is my main aim of taking up this lesson. Bye Dorcas

Jackie...Lovely to listen to to your composition and to hear the joy and satisfaction you are experiencing in playing something so delightful and self expressive! It all comes through in your music. Yoke... My improvisations were falling into a bit of a rut. Your lesson on using the 2nd sparked a new piece that sounds entirely new. Thanks for the wonderful course and your postings. So glad you offered those first free tutorials!

I agree with Jackie that her attempt was not "half bad". It was a good attempt considering the fact that she started not long ago. This is a challenge to most of us trying to keep faith with the lessons. Yoke, I want to congratulate you for the success Jackie has been able to exhibit within this short period. Keep it up and God bless.

Yes Yoke, the compositions are beautiful although I like the first one more. Thank you for sharing them. I am a member of a church choir group and once in a while I accompany the group on the piano. The lessons on accompaniment and improvisation do come in handy especially when the songs don't have notes for accompaniment. Thank you so much.

Dear Yoke Wong, Wow, I was quite impressed with this girls music. How experienced do you have to be to take this course? I think I am begginer to early intermediate. I have taken Adult piano lessons for 3 years, so I am in the Adult lessons books in yr 3 half way through. My piano teacher has had to away go away to take care of family matters, so I won't have her arroud anymore. I have done Books One & Two of Adult Piano Adventues by Nancy & Rabdal Faber and am currently halfway through Alfreds Basic Adult Piano Course book 3. Can you adise. I really love to play the piano and I can also pick out melodys by ear as well. Please email me. Frustrated...Id hate to lose what I have already learned. Cheryl

Mrs. Wong, I dearly love your video of Amazing Grace" using suspended chords. Is it possible to get a written copy of this? I have had very little formal training but can read music. I have played hymns straight from the hymnal for years and a. m beginning to improvise a little but would kike to do so much more. I know there is lots of practice involved. Can you advise me as to the best courses to order first? I am 71 years old and need to really get to work an learn to do this. Thank you! Lettie Byrdic
