Greensleeves - Piano Improvised by Howard

I received an email from Howard Nguyen (Sydney, Australia) recently. He graciously allows me to share his email with others.

Dear Yoke

Firstly, let me thank you for giving me so much pleasure with the piano music. Without you and your courses, I would still be in the dark and let me explain : about 2 years ago (when I was 65), I decided to learn piano, after a few weeks I almost gave it up as it was so difficult with the “conventional classical sheet music style”. Considering that I knew nothing about music theory nor any musical instrument at that time, I thought that piano playing was too hard for me. Then I came across YOU in the youtube, your style and teaching were so encouraging and I decided to follow you. I have purchased several DVD courses and have used them over and over again and I still do that as every time I watch the DVDs they teach me something new. I reckon the DVDs will last me for a life time.

Secondly, I want to say that your teaching is so clear and easy to follow. Your DVD courses are the best for piano improvisation. I enjoy creating my own music as you would expect me to do in improvisation, all thanks to some of the skill and techniques you teach in your DVDs

 

I would love to meet you one day and if I am closer to you then USA- Australia then I would become your student so that you can polish my techniques and tech me more skills. However music has no boundary and I feel I am closer to you than you would imagine !!!!.

I have enjoyed listened to your Greensleeves video - I think you have put your heart and soul into the playing. The rhythm is accurate/precise and the left hand accompaniment is well done. Also kudos to the good coordination between right and left hands. I can also feel the expression throughout the music.

One thing you might consider is hire an excellent piano technician; that is, someone who of course knows how to tune, but as important someone who can do the regulation of and voicing of your piano. Many piano "tuners" cannot do this. But one who can can bring the sound of your piano way up and make playing much more rewarding and easier. To find one go to a top piano store and find the name of an excellent piano technician.

I am wondering about the rhythm in the last phrase. Each time you add beats. Are you doing this to be creative, or did you have trouble at that spot? If you listen here, around the 50 second mark you will see the rhythm I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T4qdndPUW8

I am 71. I purchased more than a few of your excellent programs to enhance my playing the piano while my friend (73) plays his flute. However, the progress with "Greensleeves" is inspirational. It proves that with practice, talent, and love of music, a person's age should not be a stumbling bloc. Congratulations!!

Thank you Yoke and Howard for posting the letter and the video by Howard. I have had Yoke's Piano Improvisation course for quite a few years now and had started it, but never finished because I was still working. Now, at 65, I have retired from my job and am disciplining myself to play, using Yoke's course, every day at last. This posting about Howard, who started at my age, 65, is a real encouragement!

Congrat Howard. You've made a great Job. Unfortunately, I will never able to repeat your success because of two reasons: I'm over 80 and my English doesn't allow me accept instructions by ears. Keep going!
