This famous Cowboy song is part of American folklore, yet the origins of Goodbye, Old Paint remain a mystery. Jess Morris, a known cowboy fiddler, his version is probably the earliest recorded version of this famous and well-known western waltz. Morris said he picked up the tune from a black Texas cowhand in 1884, who learned the tune in the 1870s while he was in Wyoming. Since this time, the country standard has been recorded and performed countless times, and by a multitude of artists.
Goodbye, old paint would replace "Home Sweet Home" as the evening tunes at many of the cowboy dances. People would commonly sing well known verses and then start making up new ones to keep things moving. The lyrics remain largely unchanged and are included below.
