Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique No. 8 Op. 13, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old. It has remained one of his most popular compositions. The sonata consists of three movements. The 2nd movement represents the expressive Adagio style of many slow movements in the classical period. The cantabile from this movement was used by Billy Joel as the melody for the chorus in his 1984 song "This Night".
