The song is the English translation of the Welsh folk song, Ar Hyd y Nos. It was first recorded in 1784, with the original lyrics by John Ceiriog Hughes. The song has been translated into a number of languages, with the English translation of Harry Boulton being the most famous.

 The melody has been used in The Beggars Opera, and in the hymn Go My Children with My Blessing. The song, All Through the Night has been included in a string of motion picture films, dating back to the 1945 film starring Bette Davis, The Corn is Green. More contemporary films such as The Generals Daughter (1992), and Knowing (2009), also included the song within the soundtrack and script, respectively. In 2010, Olivia Newton John recorded the song as a Christmas Carol, with lyrics by Michael McDonald, on her album, Christmas Wish.
